Bonnie Schneider
Following my graduation from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) However, following that I was watching the liberal arts process in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75), I am convinced that education should be one which integrates the study of arts along with studies in many other subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist with a MA in 1967 as well as a Ph.D. from UCLA. My ethnomusicology program, which I started in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is comfortably located in the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. The ability to pursue multiple areas of interest is something that I truly enjoy. I am very passionate about teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) who I've written three texts namely Music in India: The Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing music, Experimenting with Culture) as well as graduate students. In between, I'll alternate between academic work and times of administrative tasks (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and now am back as Chair of Department of Music).
